What is Structural Fire Protection?

Structural fire protection is executed to support the containment and prevention of fire in a building or facility, while protecting key structural elements such as steel and timber members, and offering safe escape passage and rescue routes for occupants and fire fighters in fire related incidents.

Structural fire protection functions by compartmenting and subdividing buildings into zones of passive fire protection systems that will contain the dispersion of fire for a prescribed period of time. Fire separations and openings are sealed from a fire with smoke and fire resistance doors, ceilings and glazing – as well as fire resistant walls, fire barriers and fire proof sealants.

Furthermore, fire protection intumescent coatings unfailingly used to protect metal structural constructions from the impact of fire – providing reinforced structural fire protection.

PASSAFE also offer fire protection solutions for ventilation systems and ducting that prevent the spreading of smoke and hot gases in fire related incidents.

Why fire protect the structural members of my building?

When your steel structural members start to heat above 500°C, and while under load bearing strain, they can begin to lose their function, strength and support and will eventually buckle. Concrete, at temperatures above 500°C will internal remain relatively low in temperature thanks to its ability to absorb heat slowly. However, and dependent on the cement aggregate, concrete can be effected at temperatures above 300ºC and can cause failures in maintaining the building’s compartmentalisation. Though, only intense fires of long duration may cause any weakening of concrete structures. Yet, structural fire protection can utilise key passive fire protection solutions such as fire resistant doors, walls and intumescent or cementitious coatings to effectively protect your building from the impact of fire.

Structural Fire Protection in your building

PASSAFE Fire Protection have numerous structural fire protection systems to protect your structural concrete, steel, and timber members.

All of our structural fire protection systems have been tested and implemented in an array of construction, building and fire protection elements – no matter the size too! We use lightweight coatings devised for application direct to concrete, metal and steel, and other composites in your structural fire protection system. The intumescent and cementitious coatings are specially formulated to provide high performing passive fire protection to elements of building construction.

The PASSAFE Fire Protection team utilises a high level of fire protection experience in performance-based structural fire engineering to provide innovative solutions to safely eliminate unnecessary structural fire protection and to enhance structures for quality assured fire resistance systems. We can also implement performance-based assessments and reporting mechanisms for structural steel, timber and concrete – offering outstanding service for your building’s fire protection abilities.
